Formula Na₅P₃O₁₀, molecular weight 367.86. A white powder or granule with a melting point of 622 °C, readily soluble in water and a strong chelating agent for calcium and magnesium ions, able to soften hard water and turn suspensions into solutions. Weakly alkaline and non-corrosive, it emulsifies lubricating oils and fats strongly, has a bulk density of 0.35–1.0 g/cm³ and exists in two crystalline forms, Phase I (high temperature) and Phase II (low temperature).
