Ferrous Sulfate
Formula: FeSO4.7H2O; molecular weight: 278.05; density: 3.4 (anhydrous), relative density 1.899 (heptahydrate, 14.8 degrees C); melting point: 64 degrees C (heptahydrate). Properties: the heptahydrate is blue monoclinic crystals and the anhydrous form is a white powder. Solubility: soluble in water and glycerol, almost insoluble in ethanol.
Uses: it has a reducing effect and is used as a water purifying agent, gas purifying agent, disinfectant, deodorant, feed additive, food additive, mordant and herbicide, and in the manufacture of inks and pigments. In medicine it is used as a blood tonic. In agriculture it is used as a trace-element fertilizer to control wheat smut, apple and pear scab and fruit tree rot, and removes moss and lichen from tree trunks. Preparation and sources: the natural product is melanterite; it can be obtained by the action of iron with dilute sulphuric acid, or as a by-product from producing titanium dioxide from ilmenite, which after refining can be used as a feed additive. Notes: it loses six molecules of crystal water at 90 degrees C and all its crystal water at 300 degrees C, gradually weathering in air and oxidizing to a yellowish-brown colour; the anhydrous form turns blue-green again on contact with water; it is corrosive and hygroscopic in dry air. Packing and storage: bulk or woven bags with an inner plastic film liner; store in a dry warehouse to prevent weathering, and protect from rain and moisture during transport; in case of fire, water and fire extinguishers may be used. Category: trace-element fertilizer.
