Glass consists of silica with a melting point of about 1,700 degrees C; network modifiers such as sodium oxide, potassium oxide or boron oxide are added to lower the melting point, while network stabilizers such as calcium and alumina improve durability. Coloured glass (e.g. amber glass) is made with transition metal oxides such as iron oxide. Soda-lime-silica glass consists of silica (60%-75%), sodium and potassium oxides (12%-18%) and small amounts of calcium, magnesium and alumina (5%-12%). Brown glass bottles effectively block ultraviolet light and are suitable for packaging photosensitive drugs. The products comply with CFDA/ISO specifications and current EP and USP requirements.
